What made the biggest impact in my life, was when I through trial and errors cracked the code and discovered the blueprint on how to improve my life through goal setting, time management and productivity.
My Life In The Rat Race
I used to work for one of the biggest companies in Norway, where I was the system administrator of the SAP-solution (an IT system). My team and I were running payrolls for about 30 000 people each month.
In addition to having a supervisor role where I was planning and approving all major and minor changes to the system, I was doing programming as well.
For those of you who are familiar with the IT-industry, I was having two type of roles / positions.
Why?
I was originally a SAP IT-consultant, programmer and system developer, and I was quite good at it too. After 1,5 years of working for a smaller consulting firm, I was headhunted to this big company.
When I was hired, I was told that I was going to become the SAP guru for the whole company. My role was going to consist of about 70-80 % hands-on developing (programming) and 20-30 % administrating.
When I started in the new position, I was on fire. I liked programming and I felt that it was my dream job, and that I would stay with the company for a very long time.
But things have a tendency to change.
And they did.
After 3 years, my workday consisted of about 90 % administrating and barely 10 % programming. The workload was 150 %, which meant that I would NEVER be able to catch up with my original schedule.
Most of my time was spent on being the Mr. Fix it guy and putting out fires.
In the IT-world the word fire can be defined as a high priority issue that have been unsolved for so long that it has reached a critical point, or a medium issue that someone, who doesn`t really have a clue, THINKS is a critical issue.
As you can have guessed, most of the problem solving was of the latter part.
Almost Killed By Stress
At that point in my life I was constantly overworked, always stressed and I didn’t have much time to spend with the people I hold dearest, my family and friends. In the few occasions when I was with them, I was seldom present. I too was suffering from the multitask epidemic, which resulted in doing several tasks with a below average result.
I didn`t have time to relax and recharge my batteries, and I was constantly moving from location A to location B, never truly enjoying the moment to its fullest. I didn’t even have the energy to work out.
All the activities I had to do, was for someone else, not for myself. I felt that I spent most of my time working my ass off for someone else`s dream (the stockholders of the company I was working for). I was trapped in the rat race.
There was certain moments when just the thought of the never-ending growing to do lists, gave me trouble breathing…
To be quite frankly, I was not happy with my life.
My life sucked…
I knew that I was in deep shit (excuse my French), and that I had to do something about it.
So what were my challenges in the start?
– I didn`t know exactly what I did wrong (blinded by my own situation)
– I didn`t know how to fix my situation (you don`t know what you don`t know)
– I didn`t know where to find information to solve my problems
– There is too much information on the internet (it`s an informational jungle)
– I didn`t have any role models who was already doing what I needed to do
– I didn`t have a best practices system to follow (I didn`t have any system at all)
– I didn`t have anyone to be accountable for
After several years of studying, practicing and being out in the trenches, I have through trial and errors discovered what actually works and what doesn’t. I have cracked the code and totally transformed my life.
I`m now in a situation where I don`t work for others, and for the first time in my life I feel that I`m in total control of my own time, life and future, and last, but not least, I`m very happy.
We Only Have 24 Hours
Despite all people have 24 hours in their day, some people have achieved their dreams, while others have not.
The only big difference between a successful person and a person who isn`t, is how they have spent their time…
Productivity is key to get the life you want and reach the dreams that you have.
Through productivity dreams will no longer just be dreams, they will be long-term goals, which you will work towards to achieve.
My definition of productivity is simple
Tor`s productivity formula
Time Management x Goal Setting = Productivity
The amount of time you put in and the amount of important goals that you achieve, will be the total sum of your productivity.
There are two ways to increase your productivity:
A. Reduce the amount of time spent on achieving your goals.
B. Increase the amount of goals achieved, while NOT spending more time.
The best way, if you want to turbocharge your productivity, is of course to incorporate both of those steps.
You will increase the amount of goals you achieve, while at the same time reduce the total amount of time spent.
That is how I was able to improve my productivity with 200 %.
What if you could free up more time and spend it on what you love to do:
– be with your family
– spend more time with your good old friends that you haven`t seen for ages
– go to a concert
– go on vacation to a tropical paradise (or a really cold place, if that`s your thing)
– get more you-time – to read a good book or perhaps just lay on the coach following your favorite football team
– get a pay raise
– get a new job
– work on your part-time business, so you can quit your full-time job
– get increased income in your current business, so you can afford to hire more people, and get your time back
– buy the luxury watch or shoes that you have always wanted
Life is too short to waste. Let me help you reclaim your time, so you can focus on what you really love.
