Blogger Outreach – How To Get On 158 Blogs In 14 Months

by Tor Refsland 182 Comments

Blogger Outreach

You are embarrassed.

Lately you have been isolating yourself to work like crazy on your blog, but your results are barely visible.

The only traffic spike to your website is your mother finally being able to type in your domain name correct.

And you are starting to realize that all your hard work and effort have been a total waste of time.

But what´s even worse is that you feel…

…like a total LOSER.

You are starting to DOUBT yourself.

And stupid thoughts are appearing in your head…

I am a total FAILURE…

I am not SMART enough…

I don´t have what it TAKES…

Perhaps my brother / sister in law was correct. I should probably get a haircut and apply for a normal job.

STOP it! I can´t witness this madness anymore.

Snap out of it. Right now.

If you are willing to learn new knowledge, apply massive action and work your b*tt off, you can succeed.

Yes, you read correct. Success requires a lot of hard work.

People who say otherwise don´t know what they are talking about, and would probably have been burned at the stake in the medieval times.

Note: Even though I am not a big fan of incompetent self-proclaimed fake experts, I certainly do not support them of being a victim for physical violence. Just wanted to make that crystal clear, so you can just cancel your “Fake Expert Stake Burning Event” in your Google Calendar.

Having a blogger outreach strategy has helped me to…

*Drum roll*

Get Featured On 158 Blogs In 14 Months

Okay, I admit it. The drum roll was not necessary, since the headline of this article gave that part away (duh).

You don´t need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that out, right?

To be quite honest, when I found out that I had been featured on 158 blogs in my first 14 months of blogging with my first blog…

…I was happy.

Nah, who am I kidding?

I was freakin´ ecstatic. I was doing a victory dance while jumping up and down (yup, it´s possible).

And yeah, I needed to recount the number 3 times before I believed it.

I got featured on some of the biggest blogs in the business and marketing space, blogs like Inc., Huffington Post, Ahrefs, SEMRush, SumoMe, Boost Blog Traffic and Jeff Bullas.

Note: I have never been more humble and grateful. And to be quite honest, I have A LOT of people to thank. I´m thanking many people in this post, and the rest I´m thanking in my previous post about blogger outreach strategy.

In addition, my blog got included on the Top Personal Development Blogs in 2016. Tim Ferriss. on #2, and the guy from Norway (moi) on #50.

Even though my mother didn´t know who Tim Ferriss is, she kind of got the importance that it was kind of cool by the energy of my voice.

But hey! I´m not special (well, my mother might think I am).

I am just a guy from Norway who put in the time to learn the skills and then decided to implement the skills…

CONSISTENTLY.

And you can learn it too.

We will talk a bit more about that later.

You might be wondering about the importance of getting featured on a lot of big blogs.

And let´s be completely honest, you might actually be thinking…

Why The Heck Should I Care About Blogger Outreach?

A good question indeed.

When most people are hearing the words blogger outreach, they think about connecting with other bloggers.

However, connecting with other bloggers is just the top of the iceberg.

It´s really about building genuine relationships.

The intention is NOT to network because you WANT something from that person in the future. But because you truly want to get to know the other person.

It´s a long-term strategy, but it will repay your efforts tenfold.

You might be thinking “But Tor, isn´t blogger outreach just a way of getting someone to share your link?”

Not at all.

Getting people to share your link is easy.

Heck, getting influencers to share your link is actually quite easy, if you do it the right way.

Getting someone to share your link is cool and all that.

But if you are doing blogger outreach only to get someone to share your link, you are actually like a monkey begging for peanuts.

You are thinking too small.

You need to think…

BIGGER.

5 Insanely Awesome Things That Blogger Outreach Can Fix

Thing 1: Targeted traffic

Can blogger outreach be used to get targeted traffic?

My first roundup post 80 Productivity Tips From Incredibly Busy Experts generated 20,231 page views in 6 days (1500+ social shares and 86 comments).

Check.

Thing 2: Targeted subscribers

Can blogger outreach be used to get targeted subscribers?

In my post about blogger outreach strategy, I had a 18,14 % conversion rate. I got 295 targeted subscribers on that single blog post from 17th of December 2015 to 22nd of January 2016.

Check.

Thing 3: New customers

Can blogger outreach be used to get new customers?

In the last two months I have been using blogger outreach to turn cold leads into clients paying me $500-1500 per month.

Check.

Thing 4: Support from the big dogs

Can blogger outreach be used to get the support from the big dogs?

I got testimonials for my blogger outreach skills by these awesome influencers…

Evan Carmichael said:

Testimonial Evan Carmichael

Yaro Starak said:

Testimonial Yaro Starak

Jon Morrow said:

Jaime Tardy said:

John Lee Dumas said:

Okay, support from the big dogs? Check.

Thing 5: Unimaginable Awesomeness

Since blogger outreach is a long-term game, I often network with other entrepreneurs just because…

well, I LOVE it.

And to be quite honest, I don´t plan for specific events to happen. It´s all about being genuinely interested in getting to know the other person and and to focus on providing value and NOT asking for anything in return.

When you do that consistently, you will connect with other entrepreneurs…

and REALLY awesome stuff can happen.

I got invited to speak on the Entrepreneur Survival Summit together with big names like Brian Clark, JV Crum III, Dorie Clark and Danny Iny.

In addition, I got featured on a lead magnet as an expert bloggers together with people I really look up to: Clay Collins, Pat Flynn, Bryan Harris, Neil Patel, Jeff Bullas, Amy Porterfield and Ramsay Taplin.

List building strategies

If you told me that this was going to happen 14 months ago when started blogging, I would have made sure that the people in the white coats would have come knocking on your door.

Why?

Because at that time it was freakin´ unimaginable.

To be quote honest, I still don´t believe it…

It will probably sink in 573 days from now.

I don´t tell you this to brag.

I tell you this because I want to show you that…

Swallowing Your Stupid Ego Can Skyrocket Your Business

Most people are all about what´s in it for me?

Me, me, me…

And they are wondering why they aren´t able to build real relationships?

If you are only focusing on your own progress and what other people can do to HELP YOU…

you better be ready to fasten your seat belt.

Why?

Because life is about to give you a hard lesson a lá crash and burn.

Try to flip the coin.

What if you were to only focus on what you could do to help other people?

And you would be interested in building genuine relationships with other people…

NOT because you want something…

but because you really CARE.

Do that and you will be surprised how the world will CHANGE.

But it´s a long-term gain. Nothing happens overnight.

You might be thinking “Tor, is it really possible to connect with people who are way more successful than you?”

Hah, touché.

The short answer is…

YES.

However, email, commenting on blogs and tweeting will only take you so far.

If you really want to take it to the next level, you have to…

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone And Skype It Out

Lately I connected with these awesome influencers on Skype…

Zac Johnson
Zac Johnson

Jeffrey Gitomer

Sarah Arrow

Bryan Harris

Adam Franklin

Henneke Duistermaat

Jennifer Gluckow

Navid Moazzez

Ryan Cruz

Aaron Lynn

Listen, what I´ve been doing doesn´t require you to be a rocket scientist.

Neither does it require you to have golden hair where the sun doesn´t shine (yeah, that´s a Norwegian expression of a VERY lucky person).

So what does it require?

1. To learn the basic skills you need to build genuine relationships with other people

2. To use those basic skills in a strategic way, so you can build genuine relationships with influencers

Because the way you blogger outreach to network with someone who has a blog at the same level as you is…

COMPLETELY different than how you blogger outreach to Evan Carmichael who has an audience of 238 000+ subscribers on his YouTube channel and 217 000+ followers on Twitter.

But you already knew that, right?

    Hi Tor,

This is fantastic – and worth a closer look at (so that one can reverse engineer 🙂 )…

I remember, I first landed on your blog when you wrote a piece, I think, for Sylviane Nuccio…ever since, I have hoped right into your list, read your entries passionately and enjoyed and learnt from your works and reality.

It is important to note that in today’s blogging world, if anyone is missing out on blogger outreach, such a person does so at his/her peril!

There is, as you have said, traffic – and targeted traffic at that…aside that, there are also a ton of other benefits, especially, backlinks – and ensuring organic traffic that they beautifully make possible.

You, Tor, certainly are the man!

    Enjoy the day!

    Always,
    Akaahan Terungwa

    P.S.

In my language (Tiv), ‘Tor’ means king…certainly. you are clearly heading to rightfully claiming your crown. Will you invite me for your coronation?

Thanks for your awesome comment, Akaahan. I appreciate it BIG time 🙂

In order to having a successful blog you need great content, great values and constantly be over-delivering to your tribe. But we all know that, right?

Once you have those pieces in place, and you put blogger outreach into the mix…

it´s like pouring rocket fuel on a bonfire.

I never imagined that the following line would ever come from a man: “The first time we met was quite memorable, as you were not wearing any clothes”.

I usually heard those words back in the days from the ladies. Arg! Why did I say that. Now my better half, Sara, will make me do the dishes for the rest of the year 😉

Thanks a lot for your kind comment, Swadhin.

I really appreciate it. You just made my day 🙂

Too many people have blogs where they talk about theories and case studies other people have written.

If you do that, you´ll just be a “reporter” redistributing old news.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. But you will just be one of the gazillion other bloggers doing the EXACT same thing.

In order to build your brand fast, it´s important that you make yourself the crash test dummy for your audience.

You need to be the pioneer so you can go into the unknown…

perhaps you will be attacked by wild animals…

perhaps you will fall into a swamp…

perhaps you will run out of food and water…

the goals is that you will SURVIVE (Duh) and be able to report back.

It´s uncomfortable as heck, but once you do it.

You are CREATING the news that other people are writing about.

That´s exactly what I did when I used blogger outreach to turn cold leads into clients who pay me $500-1500 per month.

I promise you that it was scary. But it´s well worth it in the long-run. And yeah, I survived and reported back.

      Best,

      Tor

    Hi Thor,

Congratulations on all your success. 158 blogs in 14 months… My guess is you don’t sleep much 🙂

You have definitely created a winning formula when it comes to outreach. Consistency is key for sure. The more you are seen for adding value and not just holding you hand out can lead to your desired results without even asking.

Most people are impatient by nature, including me 🙂 ! We want the share, the backlink, the mention much sooner than later, which leads to use being to aggressive and not giving the relationship enough time to grow.

    Awesome post Thor!

    Take care!

      Hey Steven,

      thanks a lot for commenting.

Well, I haven´t been sleeping that much lately, but that´s more due to my baby Luna not wanting to sleep during the night.

As you mention, if you are impatient, it will lead to you being more aggressive and less smooth in your outreach.

That will most likely make your outreach smell of desperation instead of laid back coolness 🙂

As in growing genuine relationship in real life, you need to be genuine and take your time.

It´s not about what they can do for you…

but what you can do for them (and you will reach out in a polite, non-intrusive, non-sleazy way) only focusing on providing value for THEM.

That will make all the difference in the world.

      Tor

P.S. My name is Tor, not Thor. However, I understand that people can mix me up with my brother from another mother – Thor the flying superhero in Avengers. That being said, in Norse mythology the god Tor is written without the h. Darn you, Stan Lee (creator of Marvel super heroes), now everyone will soon be calling me Thor.

    Tor, you’re an amazing person!

I’m reading your article and I see myself, just at the beginning of this way (115 days ago I published my monster post-research on TOP 5 online experts). You’ve achieved amazing results, I am sure that you will achieve even more!

Thanks to blogger outreach I got more than 600 shares, 60 comments to the first article in my life. You have to build real relationships, and not to ask for something immediately.

I compare it with getting to know your beloved one. You should wine and dine him/her, give presents, always think more about him/her, and not about yourself. And when you become a couple, you have to continue developing relations.

      Hey Michael,

thanks for your kind words. You are so kind 🙂

Congrats with your results. That is awesome.

I like your metaphor. However, one small, but important comment.

When you are getting to know your below one, there are a few pitfalls:
      1. You are on your first date (and the only reason why you and most likely the other person are on that date, is to see if you can hit it off and you guys are a good match…and then finger crossed, a few years later you will buy a pink house with a white fence, get two kids and a dog)

That means that you are already EXPECTING something from that date. Even though your heart is pure, you do have a expectation to: Get feelings from that person and that it will be mutual.

      2. If only one of you have feelings for the other person, it can be really awkward.

Well not everyone get feelings for each other on the first date, but you get my point.

I see networking with people and blogger outreach to be more like getting to know another person as a friend, not because you expect anything in return, but just because you genuinely want to get to know the other person.

      If it works out, cool.

      If not, still cool.

There is no expectation. There is no pressure.

Just like two people starting to talk while watching a hockey match.

If you guys connect and it evolves into a friendship, it´s because it was natural.

      Does that make sense? 🙂

      Have an awesome day!

    Great post Tor!

An “other-centered” focus is essential to success. There is no quick fix. It takes time, patience and perseverance to develop your personal ecosystem and that includes being genuinely interested in others to develop relationships. I usually coach my team that it takes about a year before you see results.

      Hey Kathleen,

thanks for commenting and sharing from your experience.

Yes, once you are truly genuine about building relationships with other people, they will notice.

      How?

First, because you will immediately stick out (and almost no one are doing it successfully).

Second, and you are focused on what you can do for them, and not the other way around.

Yes, it´s a long term game plan. However, once executed consistently and genuinely over time, amazing opportunities will come your way 😉

Great advices you give here Tor, surely need to put some of them on use in the following months. And maybe start working harder and write better article. About influencer, I’ve found out, sadly, that most of the people that you want to work in fashion industry are a little bit… difficult, let’s say.

But hey, maybe that going to be the subject of my next article!

I love the way you place this article but what i have noticed is that it is not easy for we education bloggers to get featured in top bloggers blog of which we are finding it difficult in one way or the other to rank high.

I will be glad if you could drop some useful links so that we can connect to educational bloggers.

I hope i’ve not asked too much from you?

    Hi Tor,

I’ve visited your blog a few times before, but this is the first time I’m commenting. I just signed up for your blogger outreach course since a) this is EXACTLY what I need right now, and b) I’m thoroughly impressed with this post and the progress you’ve made. Holy cow.

I’m not new to blogging and did quite well a few years ago actually with building up a bit of a community on a previous blog, but I quit since I had no plan or genuine passion for what I was doing at the time and decided to pursue other things. I think what I always struggled with the most was how the heck do I build real relationships with people through a screen? It just never felt real to me, you know?

I’m looking forward to seeing what will show up in my inbox over the next couple of weeks!

I certainly do understand that you quit blogging, since you didn´t have passion for your topic.

In order to succeed in any type of business, it´s definitely a big advantage to have passion 🙂

Tor, incredibly useful post! Loved the most your including comments of the “big dogs” – they really reveal so much about your technique: giving to people a couple times (commenting, sharing their posts socially), connecting on Twitter, emailing words of appreciation, then giving again – all before asking for a guest post, inclusion in a roundup or a testimonial.

Plus you just did a TON of outreach & guest blogging – all in 14 months – inspiring!

Learning so much from you – thanks again!

Perfection can never be achieved. But it´s important to always be willing to learn and grow.

The goal is not to do something perfect, but to do something that is good enough.

And when I say good enough, I mean that you actions are good enough so you will achieve your desired result (and above average quality.)

    Hi Tor
Just discovered your blog from Robbie Richard’s blog and it’s my first time commenting on your blog. Am inspired!

    Agree with what you say
“If you are doing blogger outreach only to get someone to share your link, you are actually like a monkey begging for peanuts”.

Anyway, just wanted to say this post was awesome and has given new-found inspiration. Thanks for all the great post!

    Hey Tor,

I have been searching on Google for some genuine stratergies to connect with influencers and there I found your blog post.

I would say that you have nailed the topic buddy and it is really inspiring that you have featured by so many bloggers.

Blogging in an isolated medium doesn’t make any sense and yes, we need to connect with the fellow bloggers and the niche influencers.

It is truly awesome that you consolidated all your interviews here, I’m just bookmarking this post to read your replies.

I feel that it is a good opportunity to connect with the other experts who have been got featured along with you in the round-up posts.

Getting people to share our content in indeed needed and I totally agree with your viewpoints.

Keep your great work and I’ll try to be regular here. Have a great weekend ahead!

That’s pretty impressive. As someone who is just starting out, I would really like to network with other bloggers. I’ve tried emailing a blogger with my article to guest post and heard nothing back. That was discouraging for me. But I did sign up for your email course and will apply your tips. (I saw your talk at launchwithpartners and it resonated with my beliefs as well – I also noticed that you follow Yaro, I’ve been listening to his Master your Mindset audios and I like it a lot)

Very Inspiring journey. I have a question. When can a blogger think of full time blogging, I mean, what is the right time to take part time blogging to full time. Is there any time?

      Thanks a lot, Harish.

      Good question!

You can think of blogging full-time when you…

      1. Are hitting a monthly revenue that will cover your living expenses

      2. Have saved up enough money so you are able to work X amount of months with your blog

Note: Doing blogging full-time does NOT equal earning a full-time income. It´s crucial that you are able to cover the expenses for you and your family before you do it full time.

      Hope that helps.

      Best,

      Tor
