You are angry.
Because you have just set a big hairy audacious goal for your business…
but deep down inside you KNOW…
that there is NO WAY that you will hit that goal.
You blame the motivational speaker on YouTube that told you to set BIG hairy goals.
You blame the self help book that told you to AIM higher.
They are freakin` idiots! They are not the ones that have to REACH the darn goal.
But more than anything…
you BLAME YOURSELF…
for reaching for the STARS.
Does that sound familiar?
If so, no worries. I`ve been there too (more times than I can count).
Once I figured out a simple SYSTEM to take a big hairy goal and break it down into smaller manageable goals…
my life CHANGED in a split-second, and it can for you too!
Let me introduce to you the DUMB SMART System.
But first, let me give a brief introduction to DUMB goals and SMART goals.
Quick recap, DUMB goals stands for:
- Dreaming
- Uplifting
- Massive cojones (big balls in Spanish)
- Barely attainable
The advantage with DUMB goals is that you are able to set BIG goals and push yourself out of the comfort zone.
This will again make sure that you can get a BETTER result than your normally would have achieved.
Example: you can normally do 20 push-ups.
If you set your goal to do 20 push-ups in the next training session, it`s a no-brainer, right?
Of course you`ll hit it, because you have already done it SEVERAL times before.
If you set your goal to do 30 push-ups in the next training sessions, you might manage to do 23.
But you wouldn`t have given everything you had, if you didn`t aim for 3o push-ups.
You get the point.
The downside of using DUMB goals is that you might be setting your goals WAY TOO high, which will just crush your own self-esteem, since you know you won`t make it no matter what.
Let`s continue with the push-up example.
If you could normally do 20 push-ups, and you set your goal in the next training session to be 100 push-ups, it would be counter-productive.
Why?
Because there is NO WAY you could do 100 push-ups in the next training session.
Your mind would give you the negativity speech: “Hey, wake up! Are you on drugs? How stupid are you? You REALLY think you can do 100 push-ups? Ha ha.”
When your most powerful tool for success, your mind, not only turns its back on you…
but actually makes fun of you.
It will just be a MATTER OF TIME…
before you GIVE UP.
Heck, if your brain did a good job, you will most likely have given up before you even tried.
Quick recap, SMART goals stands for:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Time specific
The advantage with SMART goals is that you have proven STEP-BY-STEP system to set and reach realistic goals.
Like in the example above, where you normally can do 20 push-ups, and you set your goal to be 20 push-ups.
The downside of using SMART goals is that you will set goals that are TOO realistic.
This will again result in that you will never push yourself out of the comfort zone and reach your true potential.
And if you aren`t really continuously pushing yourself to be the BEST that YOU can BE, you are really letting procrastination getting the better of you.
You might be thinking, “okay, Tor. DUMB and SMART goals, I get it. But how do you reach your big hairy goals?”
That is an awesome question.
Let me introduce you to…
*Drum roll*
The DUMB SMART System
This system can be used in ANY area, from losing 13 pounds in 29 days without starving to becoming a world kickboxing champion.
The key to this system consists of two words: reverse engineering.
Say what?
Yeah, that is a semi-fancy word meaning that you start with the END in mind and then you plan backwards.
Let me explain.
First you set your big hairy goal using the DUMB goal approach.
Then you break that big goal down into small goals, where each small goal is a SMART goal.
Example:
You break the DUMB goal down into X amount of SMART goals.
DUMB goal = SMART goal 1 + SMART goal 2 + SMART goal 3 + SMART goal 4 + SMART goal 5 + SMART goal 6
So even though you have set a DUMB goal, you will have analysed and broken it down into 6 realistic SMART goals.

Let me give you a more detailed example.
Example 2:
Step 1: Define your DUMB goal
Your DUMB goal is to make $60 000 per year by selling your coaching services.
How do you do it?
Well you break it down.
Step 2: Define your yearly and monthly target
If your goal is to sell $60 000 per year, it means that you will have to sell($60 000/12) $5000 per month.
That is your monthly target, right?
Then the big question: how much do you charge per coaching session?
Let`s say you sell a 60 minutes coaching sessions for $100.
How many coaching sessions do you have to sell per year?
600.
How many coaching sessions do you have to sell per month?
50.
Step 3: Define Your Strategy
Your strategy in this example is to do everything through your online business, more specifically – your blog.
You want to get people on your email list where you give them a lot of AWESOME free content, and then you will offer them your coaching service.
If they don`t buy, no worries, you will still provide them with GREAT free content.
How many subscribers do you need in order to sell 1 coaching session à $100?
Let`s say that you are starting out, so you will get about 0.5 % to buy a coaching sessions with you.
That means that you need 200 subscribers.
How many subscribers do you need if you want to sell 5o coaching sessions per month?
10 000 new subscribers per month.
That is CRAZY.
But what if you focused on increasing the conversion to 2 %?
That means that you would need 50 subscribers in order to sell 1 coaching session.
How many subscribers in order to sell 50 coaching sessions per month?
2500 subscribers.
Still pretty crazy.
What if you managed to resell coaching sessions to existing clients with a 50 % succession rate?
That means that your conversion rate just bumped up to 3%(2% + 1 %).
That means that you need 33.33 subscribers in order to sell 1 coaching session.
Which again results in 1666.67 = 1667 subscribers per month in order to sell 50 coaching sessions per month.
There are basically only two ways to get more sales.
Increase traffic.
Increase conversion.
In addition there are two types of conversions.
Conversion to your email list.
Conversion from email list to sales.
You are deciding that you will be working you b*tt off to provide AWESOME value, and after 6 months, you will raise the price per coaching session from $100 to $200.
Since you will have built your brand and given great value to your subscribers, you will have the same conversion rate.
How does this impact your 3 % conversion?
Since you are DOUBLING your price and the conversion percentage stays the same, you only need 50% the subscribers in order to make the same amount of money in sales.
In 6 months you would need 16.67 subscriber to make 1 sale and 833.33 = 843 subscribers to make 50 sales per month.
So in order for this to happen you target goals would look like this per month…
Plan A: On How To Earn $50 000 Per Year
Month 1: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $100 = $5000
Month 2: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $100 = $5000
Month 3: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $100 = $5000
Month 4: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $100 = $5000
Month 5: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $100 = $5000
Month 6: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $100 = $5000
Month 7: 843 new subscribers = 25 sales à $200 = $5000
Month 8: 843 new subscribers = 25 sales à $200 = $5000
Month 9: 843 new subscribers = 25 sales à $200 = $5000
Month 10: 843 new subscribers = 25 sales à $200 = $5000
Month 11: 843 new subscribers = 25 sales à $200 = $5000
Month 12: 843 new subscribers = 25 sales à $200 = $5000
Yes, we all KNOW that it takes time to get those first subscribers and the growth will be gradually.
The same goes for sales.
However, when you hit 1667 new subscribers per month, you won`t automatically drop down to 843 subscribers.
The experts say that the more subscribers you get…
the more subscribers you get.
So you will need to brace yourself regarding a bumpy start and just keep pushing, because when you have cracked the code, you will get the momentum.
In reality it would probably look more like this…
Plan B: On How To Earn $50 000 Per Year (More Realistic)
Month 1: Only focus on building your email list = $0
Month 2: Only focus on building your email list = $0
Month 3: Only focus on building your email list = $0
Month 4: Only focus on building your email list = $0
Month 5: Only focus on building your email list = $0
Month 6: Only focus on building your email list = $0
Month 7: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $200 = $10 000
Month 8: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $200 = $10 000
Month 9: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $200 = $10 0000
Month 10 :1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $200 = $10 000
Month 11: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $200 = $10 000
Month 12: 1667 new subscribers = 50 sales à $200 = $10 000
So what is the recipe?
Focus on getting subscribers, subscribers and subscribers.
Okay, you get the numbers, and you understand that in the start you should ONLY focus on getting subscribers.
Note: In the first 6 months, you will still be needing to coach people in order to BECOME BETTER, so you can charge $200 after month 6. That would mean that you would either offer coaching for free, while you are learning the ropes, or you can do it for half the price ($50 per session). Regardless, I will not refer to this activity as your main focus area, even though you need to practice it.
You are now wondering on HOW to actually do it.
Step 4: Identify the EXACT activities (SMART goals)
Find the exact activities you need to do every single month in order to hit 1667 new subscribers per month from month 7.
SMART goals for the first 5 months:
Focus: ONLY on getting new subscribers
Activity 1: Facebook Ads (subscribers)
Activity 2: Guest posting (subscribers)
Activity 3: Commenting and blogger outreach (future possibilities)
You should start in month 6 to optimize your email list and landing page, since it will probably take at least a month to set up PROPERLY.
When I say properly, I mean that you have been testing and optimizing…
testing and optimizing…
and then some more (yes, you guessed correct) testing and optimizing.
In other words: you will have an email funnel that actually CONVERTS to sales.
SMART goals for month 6-12:
Focus: ONLY on getting new subscribers and converting to sales.
Activity 1: Facebook Ads (subscribers)
Activity 2: Guest posting (subscribers)
Activity 3: Commenting and blogger outreach (future possibilities)
Activity 4: Optimize conversion to email list
Activity 5: Optimize conversion to sales – email sequence and landing page
Activity 6: Reselling more coaching services to existing clients
You now have the recipe on how you can take a big hairy goal and break it down into smaller manageable goals.
This recipe can be applied to ANY area.
The important thing is that you APPLY the system.

My absolute BEST tips for the preparation time, regarding getting the most out of the 6 months, for preparing for plan B…
is to HIRE coaches to help you reach your goals.
There is NO WAY that you will be able to follow the plan B, if you are going to learn everything by yourself.
The best way is to hire someone who can help you navigate the unknown terrain.
They say that a smart person learns from his own mistakes, while a very smart person learns from other peoples mistakes.
If you want results FAST, you have to get help from people who KNOW their stuff.
The big challenge for entrepreneurs is that we want to do EVERYTHING ourselves, and we are wearing all the hats (different roles).
You should focus on spending your TIME on the activities that YOU are the best at doing, and get help to handle the rest of the stuff.
That will make sure that you will get the highest return on investment (ROI) for every minute that you spend on your business.

I also wanted the DUMB SMART system to be a standalone post; meaning that you could read the whole post and capturing the essential information about the SMART and DUMB goals WITHOUT having to read the other posts 🙂
That being said, I do understand that it might be a bit of repetition for people who read all three blog posts.
But hey! Important points are worth repeating 😉

I like your formula… all the SMART goals add up to one DUMB goal. Very nice. And it’s the exact reason why I map out almost everything I want to do in a Spreadsheet.
To achieve a BHAG, you gotta get ready to break down your DUMB goal into a lot of trackable SMART goals… 🙂

Mapping out everything you want to do in a spreadsheet is indeed a smart move.
